Welcome Back from the winter break! I'm ecstatic about the second semester of the 2013-2014 school year. Just before we left in December 2013, the students were tying the loose ends on all advertisement activities. Not only did the students grasp the elements of advertisements and persuasive techniques, they exemplified mastery and excellence on their culminating projects (Unit 2,Embedded Assessment #1). I'm proud of their work and what they have created to demonstrate their understanding of the material.
Now, I have began teaching how to analyze persuasive texts, using SOAPStone, Summarizing/Paraphrasing, and Predicting reading strategies. In addition, I am teaching the students how to respond to social or business matters in a professional and formal manner via the business letter. I am geared up and ready to teach our young leaders of tomorrow the skills needed to analyze texts and how to respond to those texts appropriately. At the end of the unit, the students will display their understanding of the concepts I have taught on Unit 2, Embedded Assessment #2: A Letter to the Editor. I am confident they will perform well on this task.
Please be mindful that the second quarter ends on January 22nd. My grade book is updated weekly. If your child is missing work due to absences, he or she should see me no later than Monday, January 13th, to get the assignments. Those assignments should be submitted no later than Friday, January 17th. Should your child need additional help, I have office hours on Thursday(s), from 8:15-8:45 a.m. You can also make an appointment if your schedule does not permit for Thursday. Again, I am thrilled to be your son or daughter's teacher. I welcome your comments, suggestions, and/or concerns. Please do not hesitate to email me at [email protected].
My best,
Ms. Giles
